What does 'cylinder' mean in your glasses prescription?
If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you've probably seen the word 'cylinder' on your prescription. But what does it actually mean? And how does it affect the way you see?
Cylinder is the prescription value that corrects astigmatism — a common refractive error that causes blurred or distorted vision.
What is astigmatism?
Astigmatism happens when your cornea or lens has an irregular shape. Normally, both are perfectly spherical, like a basketball. But with astigmatism, they're more oval — like a rugby ball.
This shape irregularity means light rays bend at different angles depending on their direction. Instead of focusing neatly at one point on your retina, they scatter. The result: blurry vision at all distances, both near and far.
What is cylinder?
Cylinder is the component of your glasses prescription designed to correct this astigmatism. When your prescription shows a CYL value, it means your lenses are specially made to account for the irregular curvature of your eye.
Symptoms of astigmatism
- Blurred or distorted vision
- Eye strain or fatigue
- Headaches
- Difficulty focusing on small text or screens
How to treat astigmatism
Tradition dictates glasses with cylindrical lenses. But there's a better way: laser vision correction.
At KSA Silmakeskus, we use the Flow3 procedure — a flapless surface laser treatment that reshapes your cornea with precision. Light rays then focus correctly on your retina, eliminating the blur and distortion.
The Flow3 difference:
- Sharper vision — Improved clarity both near and far, often within a week.
- Less eye strain — Reduces the fatigue that comes from uncorrected astigmatism, especially during reading or screen work.
- Better quality of life — See clearly. Stop squinting. Do what matters without thinking about your vision.
Unlike traditional LASIK, Flow3 has no flap and no cut. The entire clinical team at KSA chose it for their own eyes — that's the kind of confidence that comes from knowing the science.
With over 55,000 procedures performed under Dr. Ants Haavel's leadership, laser astigmatism correction is an effective, lasting solution that genuinely improves how you see and live.

If you're experiencing astigmatism symptoms, the next step is a consultation with an eye specialist. They'll help you choose the solution that fits your life — whether that's updated glasses, contacts, or laser correction.
