The second catch is that the images produced by these lenses are currently quite blurry. Because the contact lenses sit directly on the surface of the eye, very close to the retina, the nanoparticles end up scattering the converted visible light. This means the wearer only gets a coarse image or a general sense of where the light is coming from.
To achieve fine, high-resolution details, the scientists actually had to design a supplementary pair of eyeglasses to wear over the contacts to help focus the scattered light. Furthermore, unlike the bulky night vision goggles used by the military, which actively amplify very weak light signals, these contact lenses act as passive sensors.
