Weight-Loss Injections: Why Your Eyes and Diet Need Extra Care When the Pounds Drop

Have you heard about the new weight-loss and diabetes injections like Ozempic or Wegovy? These GLP-1 medications are truly changing lives. They work by slowing down how fast your stomach empties and sending a powerful signal to your brain that you are full.

However, there is a hidden catch. When the pounds drop fast, your body goes through a massive shock. The biggest hidden issue? Malnutrition and muscle loss.

The Hidden Risk: Eating Less Means Fewer Nutrients

When you are rarely hungry, you naturally eat much less food. But eating less also means you are taking in fewer essential vitamins and minerals. Studies show that people using these medications can quickly develop deficiencies in Vitamin D, B vitamins (like Thiamine and B12), and iron.

Even important minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium can drop, which are critical for your heart rhythm and bone health. Missing out on these nutrients can leave you feeling extremely tired, weak, dizzy, and physically drained.

Losing Muscle, Not Just Fat

We all want to lose extra body fat, but did you know that up to 25% to 40% of the weight you lose on these medications could actually be your muscle? When your calorie intake drops too low, your body starts breaking down muscle tissue for energy.

Losing muscle means you lose your physical strength, your metabolism slows down, and it becomes much harder to keep the weight off in the long run.

To stop this from happening, you need to do two things:

  • Prioritize Protein: You should aim for about 90 to 120 grams of protein every day (or 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of your body weight).
  • Lift Weights: Cardiovascular exercise is great, but to keep your muscles, you need strength training. Exercising major muscle groups 2 to 4 times a week sends a signal to your body to hold onto your strength.

What Does This Have to Do With Your Eyes?

You might be wondering why an eye clinic is talking about weight loss. The truth is, rapid weight loss and sudden changes in your blood sugar can directly affect your vision.

If you have diabetes, bringing your blood sugar down quickly is wonderful for your heart, but it can cause a temporary "shock" to the tiny blood vessels in your eyes. This can cause a condition called diabetic retinopathy to actually worsen before it gets better.

Additionally, European health agencies recently noted that semaglutide medications have a very rare but serious side effect called NAION, which can cause sudden, rapidly worsening vision loss.

Your Health Checklist

Losing weight is a great step toward a healthier you, but the number on the scale doesn't tell the whole story. Here is your checklist:

  • Eat plenty of protein and make sure you get your vitamins.
  • Do strength training 2 to 4 times a week.
  • Keep a close eye on your vision.

If you are experiencing rapid weight loss, have diabetes, or notice any sudden changes in your eyesight, taking care of your eyes is just as important as stepping on the scale. Book a routine eye check-up with the friendly specialists at KSA Silmakeskus to make sure your eyes stay as healthy as the rest of you.
