A Life Behind Glass
KSA Silmakeskus welcomes fascinating people from around the world. This summer, we met Anne — an Estonian living across the Atlantic in North Carolina, USA — who decided to correct her vision with us.
Anne is a ceramicist and owner of Blue Hen Pottery, Inc, based in Seagrove, North Carolina's pottery village. For Anne, ceramics isn't a hobby—it's a profession and a passion. Her other interests demand time and creativity too: pottery, metalwork, craft. But lately, her greatest enthusiasm has been beekeeping, which she describes as both deeply educational and genuinely challenging.
Anne came to the USA through East Carolina University in the late 1990s as a ceramic arts student at the Estonian Academy of Arts. She ended up in Seagrove through a remarkable connection: when Estonia built its first major wood-fired kiln in Kohila in 2000, with help from Seagrove potters, Anne's path to the small North Carolina pottery hub was set. Personal life tied her to America too—and the rest is history.
Glasses: A Constant Compromise
Anne got her first pair of glasses in secondary school. That means she barely remembers a life without them. But the everyday reality of wearing glasses had worn her down. "It's an endless list," she explains. "Booking eye appointments. Getting there. Feeling like you're sitting an exam in the clinic. Choosing frames that are light but durable, don't trigger metal allergies, aren't too thick, suit your face shape, don't slip down your nose, look decent but not boring, and somehow fit the budget. My work scratches lenses constantly, so the whole cycle starts again. The last year has been especially difficult—progressive lenses and I just don't get along. Add a mask and beekeeping suit on top, and glasses become genuinely uncomfortable."
Why Laser Surgery? Why Estonia?
We asked Anne directly: what made her choose Flow3, and why travel to Estonia for it?
"I'd been thinking about laser eye surgery for at least ten years, probably longer. The real push came from a trusted friend's recommendation. She'd had the procedure done about eighteen months before, and she had nothing but good things to say about both the KSA team and the whole experience. I trust friends' direct experiences far more than glossy ads online. To be honest, I didn't even bother researching US clinic prices in detail—a quick Google search suggested Estonia offered better value anyway. I'd already decided on KSA. And since I was planning a longer summer holiday in Estonia that year, the timing and recovery made perfect sense."
During the Procedure
"Truth is, there wasn't much time to overthink during the actual procedure," Anne says. "Dr. Haavel is remarkably skilled at keeping your mind elsewhere—we talked about beekeeping, pollination, all sorts of things. The whole thing happened almost before I realized it. There's a moment of intensity, yes, but it's brief and manageable. What struck me most was how calm and professional everything felt. No rushing. No sense of being on some assembly line. Dr. Haavel checked in constantly, made sure I was comfortable, explained what was happening. That matters more than people realize."
Recovery and Results
Anne's recovery followed the typical Flow3 timeline—roughly one week to clear vision. "By day three, I could already see well enough to feel genuinely hopeful. A week in, everything was sharp. The world looked crisp in a way I'd forgotten. And there's something profound about waking up and seeing clearly without reaching for glasses on the bedside table. I didn't expect to feel emotional about it, but I did."
What impressed her most wasn't just the result—it was the aftercare. "KSA sent regular check-in messages. If I had questions or concerns, I knew exactly who to contact. That peace of mind is worth something."
The Bigger Picture
For Anne, choosing KSA wasn't just about vision correction. It was about trust earned through genuine recommendations, transparent pricing, and a clinic where the doctors had chosen the same procedure for their own eyes. "When I learned that Dr. Haavel's entire team opted for Flow3 for themselves, that sealed it for me. You don't trust your eyes to people unwilling to trust their own eyes with the same technology."
Today, Anne moves between her pottery studio, her beekeeping, and her life in Seagrove—all with vision that no longer requires compromise. She's returned to Estonia annually, and without fail, recommends KSA to other Estonians abroad thinking about vision correction.
