Children's Eye Exams 6 Months to 16 Years | KSA Tallinn

Catch Vision Problems Before It's Too Late

Vision problems detected late can become permanent. That's why we've relaunched our children's eye screening programme.

We're inviting children aged 6 months to 16 years for a thorough 45-minute examination at our Tallinn and Tartu clinics for just €39.

Early eye checks matter — many conditions are preventable, but most children arrive only when damage is already done.

When Should Your Child Be Screened?

Children should have their first official eye test at 6 months old, a second around age 2–3, and then again before starting school. But Kadri Altküla, service director at KSA Silmakeskus, recommends more frequent visits.

"Many eye problems are easily corrected," she explains. "But even a couple of years' delay can make things significantly harder to treat."

The standard schedule:

  • No glasses: eye check every 1–2 years
  • Wearing glasses: exam every 6–12 months (unless your doctor advises otherwise)

Lazy Eye — Treatable When Caught Early

Our screening programme targets children from 6 months onwards, specifically to identify those at risk of amblyopia (lazy eye).

"We're looking for children with significantly different refractive errors between eyes, unusual vision for their age, or otherwise weaker-than-normal eyesight," explains Dr. Ants Haavel, founder and ophthalmologist at KSA. "One of my core goals is to stop the spread of preventable eye problems in children."

Basic screenings happen in opticians' shops and stores. But waiting lists often stretch for months — and most retail locations lack the equipment needed for young children.

"Examining children is challenging," Dr. Haavel continues. "You need speed, child-friendly approaches, and a fun atmosphere. But to get accurate, reliable results, you also need modern technology and real expertise. We've deliberately invested in both."

Thorough Screening Gives You Peace of Mind

At KSA, we can run five different tests on a 6-month-old in just 20 seconds. Older children can read eye charts and solve engaging puzzles that reveal how they see.

Optometrists and nurses conduct all examinations. Our ophthalmologists then review every result and refer children for further testing if needed.

When you choose KSA, you're choosing a clinic where our own doctors had Flow3 laser eye surgery — that's the trust we have in our team and technology. The same care and rigour applies to every child who walks through our doors.
