Computer Vision Syndrome: Causes & Solutions

Understanding Computer Vision Syndrome

Computer vision syndrome — also called digital eye strain — is becoming increasingly common. It's exactly what it sounds like: vision problems that develop from prolonged close work on screens. Whether it's a computer, phone, tablet, or e-reader, the strain is the same.

The symptoms are familiar to most of us: tired, dry, or red eyes. Eye socket discomfort. Trouble refocusing between near and distant objects. Blurred vision. Sometimes a scratchy feeling or general discomfort. And often, headaches or neck and shoulder tension follow.

Why It Happens

The causes usually boil down to a few practical issues: poor lighting (too bright creates screen glare; too dim strains your focusing muscles), bad posture, the screen sitting too close or too far away, uncorrected vision problems, or a combination of all of these.

How to Protect Your Eyes

Take regular breaks

Your eyes and body both need rest. Eye exercises help, particularly the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet (6 metres) away for at least 20 seconds. This lets your eye's lens and its supporting muscles relax and return to their natural shape, preventing eye muscle fatigue and spasm. Read more about simple eye exercises here.

Fix your setup

Adjust your monitor height so its centre sits 15–20 degrees below eye level. Position the screen further away rather than closer — at least 50 cm or about arm's length. Eliminate glare from light sources reflecting off the screen. If possible, use an adjustable desk and chair configured precisely for your body.

Enable blue light filters

Set your devices to switch to warm (yellow-toned) light in the evening. The blue LED light from screens irritates eyes, especially if devices sit closer than 50 cm. A blue light filter mimics warmer, gentler light.

Get your eyes checked

Uncorrected vision is a major culprit. Have your prescription assessed, and consider lubricating eye drops if needed. Where possible, avoid contact lenses — they contribute to dry eyes and increase infection risk.

Remember to blink

This sounds simple but it's critical. Staring at screens, we blink less, which is a common cause of dry eye. Make it deliberate.

If you're experiencing persistent eye strain or your vision has changed, a professional eye examination is always worthwhile. Whether through preventative care or corrective solutions like Flow3 laser eye surgery or ICB lens replacement, addressing vision problems early prevents long-term strain.
