Dolphins and Estonian Sailors: A Caribbean Dream

Three Estonian Sailors Head to the Caribbean
Marko Pomerants, Laura Melkonjan, and Andres Essenson are on their way to the Caribbean — and they've already conquered the infamous Bay of Biscay. Everyone warned them about the violent storms and treacherous seas. Here's how their journey across one of Europe's most unpredictable waters actually unfolded.
Life at Sea: No Time to Breathe
When you're sailing for days on end, life becomes a tight routine. "Often we arrive at a harbour late in the evening, grab a quick shower, eat, and then we're gone again at dawn," Laura explains. "Sometimes we only have time to sleep."
The core crew is just three people, but sailors never travel alone. Other adventurers join along the way. "We picked up more crew from Holland, so at times we've had eight people on board," she says. With rotating crew, boredom isn't an issue.
The Bay of Biscay: Milder Than Expected
Before crossing the Bay of Biscay, everyone shared horror stories. Fierce storms. Brutal winds. The warnings were relentless.
But the sea had other plans.
"The water was kind to us," Laura says with relief. "We had smooth waves and perfect wind — the most comfortable and peaceful passage we've had so far. Halfway across, it got so warm we stripped off and jumped in for a swim."
Then the Dolphins Arrived
The real magic happened over those three days crossing the bay. Dolphins. Dozens of them.
"There were about 20 swimming around us at one point, and the sight was incredible," Laura says, still glowing at the memory.
But the best moment came at night.
"Bioluminescent plankton lights up neon blue in the dark," she explains, her voice full of wonder. "When the dolphins came back around our boat that night, they glowed too. We could see their entire path glowing in the water. It's hard to put into words, but everyone on board felt it — that moment was pure magic."
