Dry Eyes: How Breathing Technique Can Help

Dry Eyes: How Breathing Technique Can Help

The solution to dry eyes might be simpler than you think

A recent study proved what many had overlooked: deep breathing using your abdominal muscles relaxes your core and triggers tear production. The mechanism is elegant — and it works.

The key lies in your nervous system. When it's out of balance, tear production drops. But activate the right response, and your eyes respond.

Why dry eyes happen: nervous system imbalance

Reduced tear flow often stems from an imbalanced autonomic nervous system — the part of your nervous system you don't consciously control.

Your autonomic nervous system has two main branches:

  • Sympathetic: controls heart rate, blood pressure, and your stress response (fight or flight)
  • Parasympathetic: manages digestion, rest, and relaxation (rest and digest)

Tears are produced in the lacrimal glands, which connect directly to your parasympathetic nervous system. When that system is underactive, tear production drops.

The breathing technique: diaphragmatic breathing

The solution is deceptively simple: breathe from your belly, not your chest.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Breathe in slowly through your nose for 4 seconds — let your belly rise (not your chest)
  2. Pause briefly
  3. Exhale slowly for 6 seconds
  4. Repeat

This activates your parasympathetic nervous system and tells your body to relax.

The evidence: 48% increase in tear production

Japanese researchers studied 20 adults aged 20–54 to measure the effect of breathing on tear production.

The study design was straightforward:

  • Group 1 breathed normally for 3 minutes
  • Group 2 performed abdominal breathing (4 seconds in, 6 seconds out) for 3 minutes
  • They then switched and repeated
  • Tear fluid was measured before, immediately after, and at 15 and 30 minutes

The results were striking: after just 15 minutes of abdominal breathing, tear production increased by approximately 48%.

Normal breathing produced no significant change.

Why it works

Deep abdominal breathing relaxes your body and regulates your nervous system. The slow, nasal inhalation signals safety to your brain. Your parasympathetic system activates. Tear production normalizes.

If you suffer from dry eyes — whether from screen time, environmental factors, or post-procedure sensitivity — this costs nothing and takes minutes.

Try it. Do it twice daily for a week and notice the difference.
