Why Do You Get Eye Discharge? Eye Care Guide

What Causes Eye Discharge?

Eye discharge happens because of dead skin cells and debris that land in your eye. Most of it collects in the corner of your eye, especially while you sleep. Depending on how much moisture has evaporated, it can feel wet and sticky—or dry and crusty.

It's Actually a Protective System

Your eyes produce discharge for a reason. It's a defence mechanism. Your eyes are constantly making a secretion that traps dust, bacteria, and other particles before they can damage your sight. Normally, blinking pushes this fluid out throughout the day.

But when you sleep, you're not blinking. So the discharge accumulates in the corners of your eyes, which is completely normal.

When Discharge Is Normal

Waking up with a small amount of dried discharge in the corner of your eye is healthy and nothing to worry about. It's your eye's way of cleaning itself overnight.

Red Flags: When to See an Eye Doctor

If any of these apply, book an appointment with an eye specialist:

  • Increasing amounts of discharge day by day
  • Greenish or yellowish colour (sign of infection)
  • Blurred vision alongside the discharge
  • Light sensitivity (hurts to look at bright light)
  • Eye pain or irritation

These symptoms may indicate a more serious eye condition that needs professional attention. Don't wait—contact an eye doctor promptly.
