6 Eye Exercises to Relieve Digital Strain

We spend hours each day in front of screens—laptops, tablets, phones, televisions. Screens demand more from our eyes than printed text ever did. Add the blue light they emit, and you have a recipe for tired, uncomfortable eyes.

Too much screen time causes a familiar catalogue of problems: eye fatigue, socket pain, difficulty refocusing, headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes, and even neck and shoulder tension. The good news? Regular eye exercises can prevent most of this. Here are six simple techniques you can do at your desk—or anywhere else.

The 20-20-20 Rule

Every 20 minutes at your screen, look at something 20 feet (roughly 6 metres) away for 20 seconds. That's it. This simple pause gives your eyes the reset they need and prevents the muscle spasms that come with prolonged focus.

Palming

Rub your hands together to warm them. Close your eyes and cup your palms gently over them, blocking out light. Don't press hard. Hold for 20–30 seconds. This simple technique relaxes the muscles around your eyes immediately.

Blinking

Blink slowly and deliberately 10–15 times. Close your eyes and rest for 20 seconds. Repeat 2–3 times. Controlled blinking reduces tension and restores moisture—something we naturally do less of when concentrating on screens.

Convergence

Hold a pen at arm's length in front of you. Slowly bring it closer to your nose, keeping your eyes focused on it. The goal is to avoid seeing double. This exercise trains your focusing muscles and improves coordination.

Focus Shifting

Hold a pen about 20 centimetres away. Focus on it for a few seconds, then shift your gaze to an object roughly 5 metres away. Alternate between near and far for a minute. This dynamic focusing strengthens the muscles responsible for changing focus distance.

The Figure Eight

Imagine a large figure eight on the ground 4 metres away. Trace it with your eyes for 30 seconds. Then reverse direction. This smooth, continuous movement engages your eye muscles in a natural, relaxed way.

Beyond Exercises

Your eyes, like the rest of your body, need regular movement and care. Since so much of what we know about the world comes through our eyes, their health matters. Beyond these exercises, check your setup: posture, lighting, viewing distance, and whether your prescription is current. Small adjustments compound. Within weeks, you'll notice you adapt to different distances more easily, and your vision feels sharper.

For deeper concerns about eye strain or vision changes, a professional assessment at KSA Silmakeskus can identify whether vision correction—from laser eye surgery to lens replacement—might be right for you.
