Eye Surgery Before Pregnancy: Is It Safe?

The Short Answer: Yes
You can absolutely have laser eye surgery before pregnancy. There's an old myth that women should wait until after they've had children—but it simply isn't true. At KSA Silmakeskus, we perform vision correction procedures on women who plan to have children, and their family plans don't factor into our decision to proceed.
Many women ditch their glasses just before getting pregnant, and deliver without a single complication related to their previous eye surgery. Life gets noticeably easier without frames fogging up during labour.
The Fear About Retinal Damage
You've probably heard the concern: women who've had laser surgery might damage their retinas during the physical strain of childbirth.
Dr. Ants Haavel, founder and lead surgeon, disagrees with this worry based on his 20+ years of practice. He's never witnessed or heard of a direct link between prior laser surgery and retinal complications during delivery. "All women who've had vision correction can give birth with complete peace of mind," he explains.
That said, some retinal conditions do exist independently. "Historically, if someone had weak spots or retinal degeneration, extreme strain could theoretically cause vision loss. Modern technology has changed that completely. We can now repair those weak areas with precision laser treatment," Dr. Haavel reassures.
We Screen Your Retina First
This is crucial: before any laser procedure, we examine your retina carefully in every patient. If we spot weak areas or early degeneration, we seal them with argon laser treatment. Problem solved before we even begin.
Childbirth demands enormous physical effort. Your worry about how it might affect your body is completely justified. But the statistics are reassuring: the risk of complications is small.
Dr. Haavel is straightforward: "Laser eye surgery makes childbirth more comfortable for the mother—she won't fumble with glasses or contacts during labour, and she'll see everything clearly. Beyond that, the procedure itself doesn't influence birth outcomes at all. The real benefit is peace of mind and practical convenience."
When to Schedule: Timing Matters
Here's what we recommend: have your Flow3 procedure before pregnancy, or after you've finished breastfeeding.
We don't perform laser eye surgery during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Why? The eye drops we use before and after the procedure aren't ideal during these periods. Additionally, pregnancy and breastfeeding create hormonal shifts that affect vision temporarily—so measurements and results wouldn't be accurate. We'd also postpone your Flow3 assessment if you're currently pregnant, and welcome you back once you've stopped breastfeeding for at least 4 months.
These aren't restrictions born from fear. They're practical safeguards to ensure optimal results and your wellbeing.
The Real Win
Mothers who've had vision correction beforehand report genuine happiness. No fogged-up glasses during night feeds. Swimming with your child becomes hassle-free. Playing in the winter snow? Infinitely easier. And when your baby starts grabbing at everything—your glasses included—you'll be grateful they're not there.
The confidence of seeing your child clearly, without any visual aid between you, is something many parents cherish.
