Flow3 Tests & Preparation: What to Expect

The Tests That Sold Me On It
I'm back—Maria Magdaleena again. In my last post, I told you how I finally decided to stop squinting through life as a lifelong glasses wearer. Today, I want to walk you through the pre-procedure testing at KSA and explain why the whole consultation process actually made my decision so much easier.
Before any Flow3 laser procedure happens, both eyes get thoroughly examined and measured. Success depends entirely on choosing the right patients, and that's why eye clinics like KSA run through a whole battery of tests and, yes, some genuinely odd rituals.
Laser eye surgery only works under specific conditions. Your vision can't have changed more than 0.5 dioptres in the last year. Your general eye health has to be solid. (You can read the full criteria for suitable patients here.) The point is simple: they're not trying to be difficult. They're protecting you.
The Worst Part Isn't The Laser
Here's a spoiler: the worst part of the entire laser eye surgery experience isn't actually the laser.
It's a tiny machine that puffs air into your eye. It's called a tonometer, and it measures intraocular pressure. I didn't even know eye pressure was something to worry about until that day—turns out it's just one of many measurements they need.
Measuring eye pressure doesn't hurt. It's not even particularly uncomfortable. The tonometer is like a small, cheerful robot that gives a friendly little beep to warn you before a quick, painless puff of air hits your eye. But even though I know exactly when it's coming, I still flinch every single time. And because my flinching feels embarrassing, I start apologising and laughing, which makes it even more awkward, and then I want the floor to swallow me whole.
But here's the thing: if you want laser eye surgery, you've got to make peace with the tonometer. There's no way around it. And on top of that measurement, there are plenty of other quick, painless procedures. You'll read letters on a wall (which somehow always feels like you're taking a test—or is that just me?). You'll go through various other checks.
On the day of my assessment, I randomly bumped into a relative who works at KSA as an optometrist—which was lovely, though I realise that won't happen for everyone. But I can promise you this: expect to meet genuinely warm, supportive people. Every single staff member at KSA was friendly and encouraging from start to finish.
What To Expect: Timeline & Outcome
The whole assessment took about an hour and a half. Afterwards, the team explained what they found: whether you're a good candidate for the procedure, which option suits you best, what risks exist, and—critically—whether you actually understood all the instructions and conditions.
That clarity is everything. Walking out of KSA, I didn't feel pressured or confused. I felt informed. And that made choosing Flow3 feel like the obvious next step, not a leap of faith.
