No commitment — just an honest answer about your vision.

You've probably been Googling "laser eye surgery Tallinn" for a while now. Maybe you've seen LASIK mentioned a hundred times. Maybe you assumed all laser eye surgery is basically the same.

It isn't. And the difference matters more than you'd think.

The flap problem nobody talks about

LASIK — the world's most marketed laser eye procedure — works by cutting a thin flap into your cornea. The flap is lifted, a laser reshapes the tissue beneath, and the flap is placed back down. It heals quickly. Patients often see well the next day.

Sounds brilliant, right? It is — until you consider what that flap means long-term.

The flap never fully bonds back to the cornea. Years later, it can still be displaced by a direct impact to the eye. A squash ball. An elbow during a football match. A child's flailing hand. For most desk-bound adults, this risk is tiny. But it never reaches zero.

That's the detail the glossy LASIK brochures tend to skip.

What Flow3 does differently

Flow3 is a flapless laser eye surgery method. It belongs to the family of surface ablation procedures (similar to PRK and LASEK), but refined with modern technology for greater precision and comfort.

Instead of cutting a flap, Flow3 works directly on the surface of the cornea. The outer layer — the epithelium — is gently removed, the laser reshapes the cornea, and a protective contact lens is placed on the eye whilst the epithelium regenerates naturally over a few days.

No flap is created. No flap can ever shift. Your cornea remains structurally intact.

This is exactly why KSA Silmakeskus chose Flow3 as our primary refractive surgery method — and why we don't offer LASIK at all.

"But doesn't LASIK recover faster?"

Honestly? Yes, the first few days are easier with LASIK. Most LASIK patients see well within 24–48 hours. With Flow3, the typical recovery takes about 5–7 days before you're comfortably back at work and driving.

That's roughly a week.

But here's the thing: the final visual outcome is the same. Studies consistently show that surface ablation and LASIK deliver equivalent long-term results. You're trading one week of patience for a lifetime without flap-related worry.

For our patients — many of whom swim, cycle, play contact sports, or simply want the safest possible long-term outcome — that trade-off is an easy one.

Who is Flow3 especially good for?

Flow3 suits the vast majority of people seeking vision correction without glasses. But it's particularly well-suited if:

  • You have thinner corneas. LASIK requires enough tissue to create a flap and reshape the cornea beneath it. Flow3 preserves more corneal tissue, making it a viable option where LASIK might not be.
  • You play contact sports or martial arts. No flap means no risk of flap displacement from a blow to the face — ever.
  • You swim or surf regularly. Water exposure in the early weeks after LASIK can pose infection risks through the flap. With Flow3, once your surface has healed, you're done.
  • You simply want the safest structural outcome. Many people don't play sports at all — they just prefer knowing their cornea hasn't been weakened by a flap incision.

If Flow3 isn't suitable for you — perhaps because your prescription is very high, or your cornea is unusually thin — we may recommend ICB lens implantation instead. It's a different approach entirely: a tiny lens placed inside the eye, no corneal tissue removed at all. But that's a conversation for your consultation.

Why Estonia? Why KSA?

KSA Silmakeskus has performed over 55,000 eye procedures. Our founder, Dr. Ants Haavel, is one of the most experienced refractive surgeons in the Baltics. We've been doing this for decades — not because it's trendy, but because it's what we do best.

Patients travel to us from Finland, the UK, Latvia, and beyond. Part of the reason is expertise. Part of it is practical: eye surgery cost in Estonia is often significantly lower than in the UK or Finland, for the same standard of equipment, training, and care.

We use the same laser platforms. We follow the same European medical standards. The only difference is the price — and the queue is shorter.

What happens if I'm not a candidate?

Not everyone is suited for laser correction. That's not a failure — it's just biology.

Some people have prescriptions too high for laser. Others have corneal conditions that make any surface procedure risky. This is exactly why we insist on a thorough pre-operative consultation before anything else. We check your corneal thickness, your prescription stability, your tear film, your overall eye health.

If Flow3 isn't right for you, we'll tell you. If ICB lens implantation in Estonia is a better fit, we'll explain why. And if the best advice is "keep your glasses for now" — we'll say that too.

No pressure. Just clarity.

The honest version

We could have offered LASIK. It's popular, it's well-known, and the fast recovery makes for great marketing. But after 55,000 procedures and decades of experience, Dr. Haavel and the KSA team believe Flow3 gives a safer long-term result. So that's what we offer.

If you've been weighing up your options — reading forums, comparing clinics, wondering whether it's worth flying to Tallinn — take the next small step. Our free online suitability test takes about two minutes and gives you an immediate idea of whether you might be a candidate.

Your eyes have been carrying you through life behind glass for long enough. Maybe it's time to find out what's possible without it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between Flow3 and LASIK?

LASIK involves cutting a thin flap in the cornea, which is then lifted so the laser can reshape the tissue beneath. Flow3 is a flapless surface ablation method — it works on the surface of the cornea, so no flap is ever created. This eliminates all flap-related complications.

How long is the recovery after Flow3 laser surgery?

Most patients return to normal activities within 5–7 days. Vision continues to sharpen over the following weeks. The recovery is slightly longer than LASIK, but the final visual result is the same — and without the long-term flap risks.

Is Flow3 suitable for people with thin corneas?

Yes. Because Flow3 doesn't require creating a flap, it preserves more corneal tissue. This makes it an excellent option for patients whose corneas are too thin for LASIK. A full consultation at KSA will determine whether you're a suitable candidate.
