How to Use Eye Drops Correctly: A Simple Guide

Using Eye Drops the Right Way
Eye drops and artificial tears are essential for soothing dry eyes. But applying them correctly takes a bit of practice — your eye's natural reflex to blink makes it surprisingly tricky. Follow these straightforward tips, and you'll master the technique in no time.
Many people ask a family member or partner to apply drops for them. While that's an option, it's worth learning to do it yourself. You'll be independent and can treat your eyes whenever you need to.
How to Apply Eye Drops
1. Find the easiest position Lying flat is ideal. If you can't lie down, tilt your head back slightly.
2. Stabilise the bottle with the right hand If you're right-handed, hold the bottle between your thumb, index finger, and middle finger. (Left-handed? Use your left hand.)
3. Pull down your lower lid gently Use two free fingers from your hand holding the bottle. At the same time, use your other hand's index finger to pull your upper lid open.
4. Position the bottle directly above your eye Look either at the bottle or slightly away from it.
5. Squeeze gently Apply just one or two drops. Don't press hard.
6. Close your eye and wait Keep your eye closed for about a minute. This allows the drop to absorb properly.
7. Repeat for the other eye Follow the same steps.
What You Should Know
-
Where drops should land. The drop works best on your eyeball or in the pink area inside your eye near the inner corner (by your nose).
-
Drops on your lashes don't count. If the drop lands on your upper or lower lashes, apply another one. Drops that miss the eye can't do their job.
-
Wash your hands first. Always clean your hands thoroughly before handling eye drops.
-
Space out multiple drops. If you're using more than one type of eye drop, wait at least three minutes between applications. This gives the first drop time to be absorbed properly.
-
Chill them. Storing drops in the fridge makes it easier to tell if they actually reached your eye — and the cool sensation can feel soothing.
