Laser Eye Surgery Isn't for Everyone

Laser eye surgery sounds straightforward. The procedure itself takes seconds. Yet the reality is more nuanced. Not everyone who walks through our clinic doors will be suitable for vision correction — and that's by design.

Glasses and contact lenses work. But for many people, they're inconvenient, uncomfortable, and frankly, limiting. A few decades ago, when laser procedures first emerged, complications were common. Today, the technology has transformed. The results are consistently excellent — but only when we operate on the right candidates.

How You Correct Vision Matters

The method you choose determines everything: how the surgery unfolds, how quickly you recover, and how long the results last.

"There are many approaches," explains Dr. Ants Haavel, founder and lead surgeon at KSA Silmakeskus. "Some involve cutting into the eye. Others use a tool — almost like tweezers — to remove unwanted tissue. And some correct vision without touching the eye at all."

For years, KSA used LASIK. Then we acquired a unique laser technology — the only one of its kind in the Baltic region and Scandinavia. We shifted our focus to Flow3: a completely non-invasive approach. No corneal flap. No incision. Just laser-guided correction of the corneal surface from the outside.

"Many clinics say they use laser — but that often means they're making an incision inside the eye with that laser," Dr. Haavel notes. "Flow3 is 100% contact-free. The cornea is reshaped from outside, without cutting into the eye."

The Qualifying Process

Yes, it sounds simple. Yes, the operation takes only seconds. But not everyone qualifies.

Every candidate undergoes a thorough 1.5-hour eye examination. Only after that assessment can we determine eligibility.

You're a suitable candidate if you have:

  • Stable refractive error (myopia that hasn't changed significantly)
  • Good general health and realistic expectations
  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Corneas thick enough to safely reshape
  • Age between 20 and 40 (the optimal window)

Past illnesses and current medications matter too. They can influence healing and recovery.

What Disqualifies You

Here's the honest part: we decline roughly 40% of people who come for assessment at KSA Silmakeskus.

Why? Safety comes first. If your cornea is too thin, we won't proceed — no matter how much you want the surgery. The risk isn't worth it.

For others, timing is the answer. "We'll often suggest coming back in a year or two," Dr. Haavel explains. "We'll reassess your eyes then. Circumstances change."

This isn't gatekeeping. It's the difference between a clinic that performs procedures and a clinic that genuinely cares about long-term outcomes.

What We Recommend Instead

If laser surgery isn't suitable for you, there are alternatives. ICB lens replacement — implanting a corrective lens inside the eye — works for patients who don't qualify for laser correction.

Our clinical team has performed over 55,000 procedures. We've learned what works, what doesn't, and when to say no.
