My Year Without Glasses: A Flow3 Journey

My Year Without Glasses: A Flow3 Journey

I'm Maria Magdaleena, KSA Silmakeskus's first guest contributor. My eyes have always been genetically challenging, and as a copywriter, I spend most of my life staring at screens. Add a smartphone habit, and you'll understand: my eyes have been through the wars.

For three decades, I was a glasses wearer. Full stop. The idea of laser eye surgery felt like something for other people—braver people. Yet a year ago, I walked into KSA and changed my life. Over the next few weeks on this blog, I'll tell you exactly how I overcame the fear, the excuses, and the what-ifs. And what actually happened.

Growing Up in Glasses

When I started researching this series, I asked my mum when my eyes started failing. She couldn't remember. Fair enough—three out of four kids in our family needed corrective lenses early. Who keeps track?

Best guess: third grade. My prescription crept steadily worse through my teens and twenties, picking up astigmatism somewhere along the way. By my early thirties, I'd settled at around -5 diopters in both eyes.

In Praise of Spectacles (And Why I Resisted Change for So Long)

By the time I learned that laser surgery could fix my vision, glasses had become part of who I was. Reaching for them first thing in the morning wasn't a choice—it was automatic. Twenty years of the same motion becomes instinct. You don't think about it.

School kids teased me about them once. I barely remember it bothering me. I was a content glasses wearer. Only occasionally, when I wanted to feel like someone else for an evening, I'd try contact lenses—which my eyes tolerated but never quite loved.

A typical day at my desk as a copywriter Typical Tuesday.

But life with glasses wasn't entirely harmonious. There were limits.

The Breaking Point

I love swimming. Every time I stood at the pool's edge or waded into the sea, I'd curse my useless eyes. I remember one beautiful summer evening diving boldly into Tallinn Bay—only to have the waves sweep my contact lenses away in seconds. At the sauna, glasses weren't practical or comfortable. I had to be painfully careful not to knock them off near the heat.

There were rain-spotted lenses, glasses slipping down when I exercised, the constant need to clean them, the way they fogged up in winter. Small irritations, individually. Collectively? They were a constant reminder of limitation.

I kept telling myself: "This is just how my life is."

Until I decided it wasn't.

Why I Finally Booked the Appointment

I'd researched Flow3 laser eye surgery before. The flapless technology intrigued me—no corneal cut, no flap, which meant faster healing and lower risk. But research wasn't commitment. Commitment meant admitting I was afraid.

Afraid of pain. Afraid of complications. Afraid of the unknown. And perhaps most irrationally, afraid that without glasses, I wouldn't be me anymore.

What changed? Honestly, I got tired of being afraid.

I booked a consultation with Dr. Ants Haavel at KSA. Within weeks, I was lying under the Flow3 laser.

Over the coming posts, I'll walk you through exactly what happened: the preparation, the procedure itself, the first strange week of healing, and what life looks like now on the other side of thirty years of spectacles.

If you've worn glasses your whole life and thought surgery wasn't for you—stay tuned. My story might surprise you.
