Makeup After Laser Eye Surgery: Complete Guide

Makeup After Laser Eye Surgery: What You Need to Know
One of the most common questions we hear from patients is simple: when can I start wearing makeup again?
It's a practical question, not a vain one. And it matters. Makeup timing plays a real role in how smoothly your Flow3 procedure heals and how quickly you can return to normal life without glasses or contacts.
Laser eye surgery is, after all, surgery. That means there are guidelines to follow before, during, and after to protect your results and avoid complications. Think of this as your complete makeup roadmap.
Before Your Laser Procedure
Wear minimal eye makeup to your pre-operative appointment. That means less mascara, eyeliner, and eyeshadow. Why? We'll be running multiple diagnostic tests on your eyes, and makeup particles can interfere with accuracy. Plus, products can smudge during examination.
If you can't live without mascara, visit a lash technician about 7 days before your procedure. They can tint your lashes so you look finished without product.
Lash extensions are fine. You don't need to remove them for surgery. However, plan any lash maintenance for at least 7 days before your procedure. And wait 1.5–2 weeks after before getting them done again.
The Day of Your Procedure
No makeup. At all. This means no foundation, powder, blush, mascara, eyeliner, or eyeshadow.
Avoid makeup for 24 hours before your appointment as well.
Skip perfume and aftershave on procedure day too—these can irritate freshly treated eyes.
Don't apply face creams or eye creams the morning of surgery.
We know it feels like a lot. It is. But this is non-negotiable for safety.
After Your Laser Procedure
Once we've finished, we'll place protective contact lenses over your eyes. These stay in for 7 days and are removed at your follow-up appointment.
While protective lenses are in (Days 1–7):
No mascara or eyeliner. These products can slip under the lenses and cause irritation.
Avoid eyeshadow and brow products for the full 7 days. Same reason—particles can migrate into the eye area.
Skip foundation, powder, and blush during this window. These can also find their way to your eyes and cause discomfort.
You can use face wash and moisturiser, but be careful. Keep them away from your lids and the area directly around your eyes. Don't let anything drift into the eye itself.
Replace or thoroughly clean your makeup brushes and tools after surgery. Brushes harbour bacteria, and fresh eyes need fresh equipment—or at least properly sanitised gear.
After lenses are removed (Day 8 onwards):
Once we take out your protective lenses, restrictions ease. You're free to return to your normal makeup routine.
Your eyes will feel strong again. Just remember: they've been through something, so treat them gently for the first few weeks if anything feels off.
