Our always-busy yet ever-helpful consultant Laura uses Estonian, Finnish, and English every day in her work to speak with clients from around the world. She is like an information desk, an advisor, and an optometrist all in one — someone who fields questions about laser eye surgery, eye conditions, and medications both during and after working hours. She has never needed laser eye surgery herself — her vision is an extraordinary 158%!
Laura says that because she has not undergone the procedure herself, she has made up for that lack of personal experience by going through thorough pre-operative eye examinations several times. She is an ideal patient for our optometrists, because she asks absolutely everything every time. Laura puts herself in the position of our patients so that she knows exactly what everyone who comes to KSA goes through, and in doing so prepares our optometrists for every possible question.
"I have to be like a sponge, absorbing every piece of information about vision and eyes that I can get from our surgeons, optometrists, other colleagues, and even patients. I have to know everything there is to know in this field, because the people I speak with can ask very specific questions. I must admit that when I first started in this role, I sometimes did not even understand the question, let alone know the answer! But I have learned a great deal during the time I have spent here," Laura said.
"Most of the time I end up thanking the clients who share something new about vision or eyes. When they ask about something I do not yet know, I have to consult several sources to find a thorough answer. And that is usually how I learn new facts. Because of my work, I am now like a private eye consultant for my friends and family. I happily try out the tips that Dr Haavel gives for maintaining good vision, and then recommend them to my friends as well."
Laura values her sharp vision greatly. "I love reading, going to the gym, cycling — I could not imagine having to do all of that and enjoy it so much while wearing glasses or contact lenses. That is why I take very good care of my eyes!"
