Quiet Courage and the Changing Body
Ageing forces us to pay closer attention to ourselves. As we grow older, the body introduces new sensations, and with them, an entirely natural sense of fear. A sudden, throbbing pain around the eyes and head can be alarming. When bright light suddenly becomes unbearable, or a deep ache settles behind your brow, it is easy to imagine the worst. Fear grows in the spaces where we lack understanding. But the architecture of the human head is deeply connected. All sensations of temperature, touch, and pain from the face travel to the brain through a single pathway: the trigeminal nerve, also known as the fifth cranial nerve . Because of how these nerve branches converge, the brain sometimes confuses where the pain is actually coming from . This is known as referred pain. For example, a heavy pressure behind the eyes that worsens when you change your head position is often just referred pain from your sinuses . The eye area itself might look completely normal, but the ache feels deeply rooted behind it . Similarly, a pounding or throbbing sensation accompanied by nausea or light sensitivity is frequently a migraine, triggered by irritated nerve pathways associated with the eye . Courage comes from understanding how you are built. Occasional irritation is common, but you do not need to live with persistent discomfort . You should always seek immediate medical care if pain is accompanied by a sudden loss of vision, noticeable swelling, or seeing halos around lights . Paying attention to these shifts, and scheduling routine checkups, is how we take responsibility for our health . There is a profound transformation in learning to trust your body. When you understand its signals, fear fades, leaving only a quiet, steady awareness.
