Foam Party Eye Injuries: Risks & Prevention Guide

As machines spray foamy bubbles onto partygoers, revellers with faces full of soap bubbles may suffer from stinging, burning eyes. Not to mention falls that can happen when the floor becomes slippery and people cannot see where they are going because they are dancing through a cloud of foam.

The dangers of foam parties – a real case from Florida

Around 40 people sought emergency care for eye injuries after a foam party in Florida. Club visitors described intense eye pain and temporary blindness.

One emergency physician, who has seen the trend grow in popularity, says the parties are potentially dangerous. Officials do not know exactly what went wrong at the Florida club, but it is possible that concentrated soap was not diluted properly.

What hazards lurk at foam parties?

At a foam party, the chemicals in the soap can irritate the eyes, much like chlorine from a swimming pool or the sting of a hot tub that gets into the eye. More common than eye injuries, however, are falls that occur because people cannot see what is on the foam-covered floor beneath them. Foam can also cause nausea and vomiting if too much is inhaled or swallowed.
