The Chemistry of the Starry Night: Did Van Gogh See the World Through a Yellow Filter?

Walk through any gallery showing the late masterpieces of Vincent van Gogh, and one color immediately overpowers everything else: yellow.

From the blazing sunflowers to the brilliant wheatfields under a burning sun, Van Gogh's late period is an explosion of chrome and ochre. For decades, art historians simply assumed this was a brilliant creative choice—a symbol of warmth, hope, and the light of southern France.

But to ophthalmologists and pharmacologists, Van Gogh's yellow world raises a different, thrilling question: Did his eyes physically see the world differently?

The Foxglove and the Poisoned Eye

The most famous scientific theory surrounding Van Gogh's vision is known as the digitalis hypothesis.

During the final years of his life, Van Gogh suffered from severe psychiatric crises and epileptic seizures. He placed himself under the care of Dr. Paul Gachet, an eccentric physician with a deep interest in botany. In the late 19th century, medical science was in its infancy. Lacking modern neurological drugs, physicians often tried powerful herbal remedies as cure-alls (panaceas) for a variety of unexplained illnesses.

One such remedy was digitalis, an extract from the common foxglove plant (Digitalis purpurea). While modern medicine uses digitalis (digoxin) to regulate heart rhythms, in the 1880s it was frequently prescribed to treat epilepsy—despite being entirely ineffective for seizures.

Digitalis is incredibly potent, and the difference between a helpful dose and a toxic dose is exceptionally narrow. When a person suffers from digitalis toxicity, the drug targets an enzyme called Na+/K+ ATPase.

Here is where art and biology collide: this enzyme is highly concentrated in the color-processing cone cells of the human retina. When these sodium-potassium pumps are disrupted in the retina, it can lead to a rare clinical condition called xanthopsia—a literal yellowing of vision.

Patients suffering from digitalis poisoning report that their entire world appears with a yellow, hazy tint. Points of light can also appear to have glowing, circular, colored halos around them.

The Clues Hidden in the Paint

When we look at Van Gogh's work from his time under Dr. Gachet's care, the circumstantial medical evidence is astonishing:

The Portraits of Dr. Gachet: Van Gogh painted two portraits of his doctor. In both, Gachet is depicted holding a foxglove flower on his table—the exact source of digitalis.

The Swirling Halos: In The Starry Night (1889), every star and the crescent moon are surrounded by massive, concentric rings of glowing yellow light—a textbook symptom of digitalis-induced halo vision.

The Unequal Pupils: In his famous Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear (1889), Van Gogh painted his own face with one pupil significantly larger than the other. Unequal pupil size (anisocoria) is a rare but documented side effect of digitalis toxicity.

The Green Fairy and the Turpentine Crises

Of course, digitalis isn't the only chemical suspect in Van Gogh's life. Historians have long pointed to his heavy consumption of absinthe, the legendary green liqueur.

Absinthe contains thujone, a compound derived from wormwood. Historically, Valentin Magnan (a 19th-century French psychiatrist) claimed that absinthe caused unique hallucinations and a syndrome called "absinthism." However, modern chemical analysis has debunked this. Thujone acts as an antagonist on GABA_A receptors in the brain (blocking inhibitory signals and causing excitability), but the levels of thujone in both historical and modern absinthe are far too low to cause visual hallucinations or yellow vision.

Any psychiatric distress from absinthe was simply the result of extremely high alcohol content (often over 50% ABV) and cheap, toxic industrial additives.

There is also the turpentine theory. During severe depressive breakdowns, Van Gogh was reported to have ingested his own paints and drank turpentine (a paint solvent). While turpentine is highly toxic and can cause devastating neurological damage and general visual impairment, it does not affect color perception and cannot explain his yellow vision.

Fact, Speculation, or Genius?

As compelling as the digitalis hypothesis is, Kathryn Harkup, a prominent science writer, reminds us to remain humble. There is no surviving prescription log or medical proof that Dr. Gachet ever gave Van Gogh digitalis.

The uneven pupils in his self-portrait could simply be an accidental slip of the paintbrush. The foxglove in Gachet's portrait might have been painted simply because Gachet loved botany. And Van Gogh's intense yellows may have been a conscious, triumphant choice to express the warmth of life in the face of deep psychological despair.
