The Overlooked Side Effect: How Cancer Treatments Affect Your Eyes

Cancer treatment asks a tremendous amount from you. It takes your energy, your time, and an incredible amount of patience to navigate the journey to recovery. With so much happening in your body, your eyes are usually the very last thing on your mind—until they quietly start to send signals that something has shifted and they begin causing you daily discomfort. If symptoms become persistent, a calm Vision Audit can help document what is happening and give your medical team clearer information.

Why Your Eyes Are Affected

It helps to understand exactly what is happening behind the scenes. Cancer treatments—whether they are classical chemotherapy, targeted therapies, or immunotherapies—are specifically designed to aggressively attack rapidly dividing cells or target specific proteins to stop the disease.

Unfortunately, the healthy cells on the surface of your eyes and the delicate cells inside your tear glands also naturally turn over and divide very fast. Because they act similarly to the cells the drugs are trying to find, your healthy eye cells are unintentionally caught in the line of fire. The treatments cannot always tell the difference, making your eyes an unintended target for the medication's side effects.

Common Symptoms You Might Experience

Because of this cellular disruption, the most frequent side effect you might encounter is dry eye disease. This often feels like a constant sensation of grit or sand in your eyes, a persistent burning feeling, or simply eyes that feel completely exhausted and tired all day long.

Ironically, you might also experience the exact opposite: excessively watery eyes. Sometimes, treatments can block the tiny tear drainage passages in the corners of your eyes, or cause your eyes to swell, meaning tears cannot drain away properly and instead spill over your cheeks.

Another very common warning sign is waking up with red, swollen, or crusty eyelids, a condition known as conjunctivitis, which happens when fluid collects in the tissues around your eyes. You might also notice a new, sharp sensitivity to bright lights.

Simple, At-Home Solutions

Fortunately, you can manage many of these side effects at home with a few simple strategies. First, the most important step is to use over-the-counter, preservative-free artificial tears. These are incredibly gentle for daily use and help stabilize your tear film.

You must avoid regular eye drops that contain preservatives, because those chemicals can actually make your irritation much worse when your eyes are already sensitive.

Second, if your eyelids become red, puffy, or irritated, a warm compress works wonders. Just place a clean, wet, warm cloth over your closed eyes for 15 minutes, twice a day, to help ease the swelling and soothe the irritated area. Remember to practice good hygiene by using a separate, clean towel for each eye so you do not accidentally spread germs back and forth.

Finally, if you usually wear contact lenses, you should switch to wearing your glasses until your eyes have completely healed, and avoid using any eye makeup. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection when you go outside can also greatly help if you are experiencing light sensitivity. Ask your doctor about blinking exercises or gentle eyelid massages, which can also help stimulate moisture.

Your Support at KSA Vision Clinic

The most crucial piece of advice we can give you is this: never stop or alter your cancer treatment on your own just because your eyes are bothering you. That decision belongs entirely to your oncologist, whose primary goal is to save your life.

At KSA Vision Clinic, our job is entirely focused on helping keep your eyes comfortable and protected through this difficult treatment process. We are here to act as a supportive part of your medical team. We encourage you to tell us about every single drug you are taking, even ones you stopped years ago, so we can accurately monitor your eye health.

Cancer treatment is hard enough on its own; worrying about your eyes does not need to be added to your heavy list of burdens. If your eyes are dry, painful, light-sensitive, or your vision changes, book a Vision Audit at KSA and keep your oncologist informed. We are always here to help you see a clearer, more comfortable future.
