Why Do We Cry? The Science of Tears

Why Do We Cry?

You've probably wondered why tears roll down your face when you're sad, disappointed—or cutting an onion. Turns out, crying is one of the most distinctive and fascinating things humans do. It's also the only physiological function unique to us.

But here's what most people don't know: there are three different types of tears, and each one serves a specific purpose.

Basal Tears: Your Eyes' Constant Protection

Basal tears are in your eyes right now, working silently. Their job is to shield your eyes from dust, bacteria, and other unwanted invaders. Every time you blink, a fresh coat of basal tears keeps your eyes moist and protected.

These tears have three distinct layers:

  • The lipid (oily) layer on the outside keeps your eye surface smooth and clear.
  • The aqueous (watery) layer in the middle handles hydration and fights off bacteria.
  • The mucus layer underneath keeps the tears anchored to your eye.

When this system works properly, your eyes feel comfortable and healthy. But if your eyes feel tired quickly, or if you have that gritty, sandy sensation that won't go away even after blinking or rinsing, you might have dry eye syndrome.

Interestingly, dry eye doesn't always feel dry. Some people experience excessive tearing, redness, or irritation instead—which can also signal dry eye. Either way, it's worth talking to an eye specialist.

Reflex Tears: The Emergency Response

Reflex tears flood your eyes when something irritates them—wind, smoke, or that infamous onion compound (syn-propanethial-S-oxide). They arrive in large quantities to wash away whatever's bothering you.

These tears contain antibodies that fight microorganisms, and they're your eye's emergency flush system. It's fast, powerful, and highly effective.

Emotional Tears: The Mystery

Then there are emotional tears—the ones that come with sadness, disappointment, or even joy. These are the most mysterious. Scientists still can't explain them with 100% certainty, but several theories exist.

One suggests tears trigger empathy in others—a survival mechanism built into us. Another points to stress relief: 85% of women and 73% of men report feeling significantly better after crying.

A third theory argues that tears strengthen communities by building emotional bonds and deeper relationships—things that matter when life gets complicated.

But here's the puzzle: why do tears also come when we're happy? The answer is simple: your brain doesn't distinguish between positive and negative emotions. Both trigger the same tear response.

Keep Your Eyes Healthy

Your tears do crucial work every single day. If you're experiencing dry eyes, excessive tearing, or any discomfort, don't ignore it. Modern solutions like Flow3 laser eye surgery or ICB lens replacement can help, but the first step is a proper eye assessment.
