Urmas Saat: Flow3 laser eye surgery was painless

Urmas Saat: Flow3 laser eye surgery was painless

He's on the mountain. Snowboard under his feet. Racing down without a care in the world. He was wearing contact lenses because glasses on a slope are simply impractical. Then it happened—one lens flew out of his eye.

His prescription was solid: -2.75 in one eye, -2.5 in the other. Anyone who wears glasses knows that without correction at that strength, the world becomes a blur. Not safe. Not manageable. And then the second lens disappeared too—somewhere on a snowy mountainside, thousands of metres up, while he was hurtling downhill.

Years later, Urmas Saat, 56, laughs when he remembers that close call. But at the time, it wasn't funny. The situation resolved itself, thankfully, but every morning after that came with a new anxiety: wrestling contact lenses into his eyes while a group of friends waited impatiently to hit the slopes together.

"Contact lenses were a constant nightmare," Urmas admits. "Once I forgot them before the sauna and one lens stuck to my eyeball. I had to rush to the doctor. Everything turned out fine, but that constant worry wore me down. I'd been active my whole life—I didn't want to live like this."

Sport and glasses don't mix

Urmas spent years as director of Hawaii Express. Today he runs a vacation home sales business. He cycles on road bikes, snowboards, does triathlons. In winter, he skis when he can. All of these demand sharp, reliable vision—even in difficult conditions. Rain, fog, bright sun, heavy snow. You need to see clearly.

Short-sightedness made it all far harder. Glasses were uncomfortable and frankly impractical for serious sport. Contact lenses felt risky. And swimming with lenses isn't advisable anyway—salt water and chlorine can damage them.

"I'd worn glasses since childhood. I was used to them," Urmas laughs. "And I'll be honest—they looked good. There's something about glasses that says 'intelligent person.' A lot of people choose them for exactly that reason."

Back in Soviet times, he had particularly good-looking frames. Imported ones, expensive, the kind of thing only important people owned. As a clever young man, he even managed to get himself optical sunglasses—nearly impossible to find back then. Glasses felt like part of his identity.

"But they were a hassle in their own way too. My good frames would break, get lost, or end up forgotten somewhere. When they finally became unwearable, I couldn't replace them with exact copies, and new frames never felt quite as light or comfortable."

That's when the idea first seriously took root: what if he could correct his vision with laser surgery instead?

Fear held him back

But Urmas didn't act on it right away. Fear got in the way.

Dr Ants Haavel, founder of KSA Silmakeskus, is a good friend of his. Ants explained the Flow3 procedure in detail—how it works, what to expect, the safety record. But Urmas hesitated. Laser near the eyes? It sounded risky.

"I kept thinking about it," he says. "But I was afraid. That's the honest truth. You don't mess with your eyes lightly."

It took time. Years, actually. But each season brought the same irritation: fumbling with lenses, worrying about losing them during sport, knowing his performance suffered because he couldn't rely on his vision the way he wanted to.

Eventually, the accumulated frustration outweighed the fear.

The decision

Urmas booked a consultation at KSA Silmakeskus. Dr Haavel ran all the standard tests—topography, measurements, everything needed to determine if he was suitable for laser correction.

He was. Flow3 was the answer.

The Flow3 procedure is different from traditional laser eye surgery. There's no cutting, no flap—just precise laser reshaping of the corneal surface. It's gentler on the eye, and crucially for someone like Urmas, it's the safer choice for athletes and people who live active lives. The healing happens at the surface, and there's minimal risk of complications during sport or contact.

Recovery is fast—about a week before vision stabilises properly.

"The procedure itself was painless," Urmas says simply. "I was nervous beforehand, obviously. But once it started, there was nothing to fear. Dr Haavel and the team knew exactly what they were doing. I felt safe."

The laser made a soft ticking sound. His eye felt slight pressure, nothing more. Within minutes, it was over.

Life after

Within days, Urmas could see clearly without any aid. No glasses. No lenses. Just clear vision.

The anxiety vanished. No more mornings spent fiddling with contact lenses. No more worrying they'd fall out mid-activity. No more checking twice that he hadn't forgotten them.

He was back on the slopes within a week. Back on his road bike. Back to triathlon training without the friction and worry that had become part of it.

"It's strange how quickly you adjust," he reflects. "For decades, I needed something to see properly. And then suddenly... I just saw. Clearly. Without anything in between."

The freedom was exactly what he'd been after.

Why does this matter? Because Urmas isn't unique. Thousands of active people choose to correct their vision rather than live with the constant compromise of glasses or contact lenses. And they choose Flow3 because it's designed for people whose lives involve movement, sport, and pushing boundaries.

Even the clinical team at KSA Silmakeskus chose Flow3 for their own eyes. That tells you something.

If you've been thinking about vision correction—if fear or uncertainty has held you back—consider what Urmas discovered: sometimes the thing you're afraid of is the gateway to the freedom you actually want.
