Vision Problems and ADHD: What the Research Shows

The Connection Between Vision and Behaviour
Researchers at the University of Alabama discovered something striking: children with vision problems are significantly more likely to show ADHD symptoms.
They analysed data from over 75,000 American children collected during national health surveys in 2011 and 2012. The findings were clear. Children with moderate or mild vision problems had notably higher rates of ADHD compared to those with no vision issues. Even when researchers adjusted for other known ADHD risk factors, the connection remained.
What Counts as a Vision Problem?
Dr Dawn DeCarlo, director of the Centre for Low Vision Rehabilitation, explains that vision problems extend far beyond simple shortsightedness or longsightedness. We're talking about colour blindness, amblyopia (lazy eye), visual field loss, and other conditions that glasses or contact lenses alone cannot fully correct.
Why the Connection Matters
The question isn't yet entirely answered. But Dr DeCarlo offers two possibilities:
First, it could be straightforward misdiagnosis. Children who can't see properly struggle to focus on things they can't see clearly — so they look inattentive. Parents and teachers interpret this as ADHD when it's actually a vision issue.
Second, and more complex: a child with undetected vision problems may unconsciously direct all their attention towards compensating for poor sight. That leaves nothing left for other tasks. They can't concentrate on schoolwork, instructions, or social cues because their brain is fully occupied managing their vision deficit.
What We See in Practice
Gustav Keskküla, optometrist at KSA Silmakeskus, agrees: "While optometrists aren't trained to diagnose ADHD, we see the connection between vision problems and behavioural difficulties almost daily. We've noticed patterns that parents and teachers often miss."
He points to a bigger problem: specialists work in silos. The GP takes blood tests. The eye doctor treats the eyes. The psychologist addresses mental health. Nobody talks to each other.
But children's health demands better. We need joined-up thinking.
A Better Approach
At KSA Silmakeskus, when we conduct children's eye examinations, we provide parents with a detailed report. It includes not just the optometrist's findings, but also our recommendations for next steps — and we encourage parents to share this with their child's other healthcare providers.
If your child struggles with concentration, behaviour, or learning — and you haven't ruled out vision problems — a proper eye test is worth doing. It might be the answer you've been looking for.
