Medications That Affect Vision: What You Need to Know

Medications Can Affect Your Eyes More Than You Think
Most medicines are safe. But some—a significant minority—carry real risks for your vision. They might cause dry eyes. They might blur your sight. In rare cases, they can cause permanent damage.
This matters. If you notice vision changes while taking medication, tell your doctor immediately. Early action can prevent serious complications. Below are five medication types known to affect eye health.
1. Acne Medications
Certain acne treatments can trigger dry eyes and cause sudden vision loss in dim light. If you're on isotretinoin (Accutane) or similar drugs, monitor your eyes closely.
2. Antihistamines
These treat allergies, hay fever, and insect bites. But some can raise eye pressure suddenly—sometimes triggering angle-closure glaucoma. Watch for headaches, severe eye pain, nausea, blurred vision, or coloured halos around lights. These are warning signs. Seek immediate care.
3. Antimalarial Drugs
Rarely, long-term use can permanently damage the retina and cause irreversible vision loss. If you take these medications for extended periods, regular eye checks are essential.
4. Corticosteroids
Used for arthritis, psoriasis, and severe allergies, steroids like prednisone increase the risk of cataracts and glaucoma. They raise eye pressure, a key glaucoma trigger. If you're on long-term steroids, ask your doctor about eye monitoring.
5. Erectile Dysfunction Medications
Users report blurred vision and increased light sensitivity. These side effects are usually temporary, but if they persist, contact your eye care provider.
What Should You Do?
Don't stop taking prescribed medication without guidance. Instead:
- Tell your doctor about any vision changes
- Ask whether your medications affect eye health
- Have regular eye checks, especially if on long-term medication
- Report warning signs immediately (pain, halos, sudden blur, floaters)
Your eyes deserve the same attention as the rest of your health. If vision problems develop, getting checked early makes all the difference.
